Gamesville bingo zone

Gamesville was a casual gaming portal founded in 1995 in Boston, Massachusetts by Steven Kane, Stuart Roseman and John Furse.[1] Gamesville was acquired in 1999 by Web portal Lycos for $232 million in stock.[2] Gamesville’s tagline was 'Wasting your time since 1996'.

History[edit]

Founded on a minimal capital base, Gamesville operated not just as a games provider but as a targeted marketing operation, offering free games and prizes to members as a way to attract large numbers of users while tailoring their proprietary games to meet the demands of advertisers.[1] To play, members must provide demographic information; in turn, members would receive targeted ads based on the demographics provided. Gamesville pioneered the use of interstitial advertising as a method of monetizing game players.[3]

Gamesville's first game, The Bingo Zone, enabled hundreds of people to compete against one another in real time, for free, and win up to $20 by getting a bingo. Initially, Kane was skeptical of launching a free online bingo game because bingo is traditionally associated with the elderly rather than the prized demographics most advertisers seek. However, on the day Gamesville.com launched in April 1996, the Wall Street Journal ran a story about Gen Xers playing bingo in bars, and Kane is quoted as saying, 'It was as if God had whispered to us.' [4]

Over the years, additional free games with cash prizes were added, including card, trivia, puzzle, and several bingo variants. This approach attracted many visitors: In August 1999, Gamesville.com was the 'stickiest' site on the Internet with eBay in second place.[5]

Lycos[edit]

In November 1999, internet portal Lycos announced that it would spend $270 million in stock to acquire Gamesville.com, which at that time had approximately 2.2 million registered users.[6]

Gamesville leveraged its relationship with Lycos to obtain the rights to produce the first (and to date, the only) online version of the popular television game show The Price Is Right in 2002 although the license was dropped after one year.

In 2002, Monster.com profiled Gamesville's Rewards Manager, Josh Yeager, citing him as holding one of the Top 10 Coolest Jobs on the Internet.[7] Yeager estimated that he sent out between 1,000 and 2,500 prize checks weekly, indicating that 'some days I feel like the Bob Barker of the Internet, other days like Santa Claus himself.'[7] There is in fact more truth to this statement than at first glance, as Gamesville, for a brief time in 2002, had hosted the exclusive Internet game rights to The Price Is Right.

Over the years, Gamesville developed several games without prizes including a multiplayer online version of Spite and Malice and an online version of Spider Solitaire.

Drifting away from its focus on prizes caused the number of visitors to Gamesville.com to slowly but steadily decline.[8]

Skilljam[edit]

In an attempt to reinvigorate the Gamesville site, Lycos entered into a year-long integration with Skilljam starting in 2006; purportedly the integration was designed to provide premium 'best in class skill and casual free games for cash prizes, combined with exclusive games content not available anywhere else'[9] to Gamesville players. However, instead, the integration with Skilljam only hastened the decline in traffic to Gamesville.

In April 2007, Lycos issued a public apology,[10] announcing an end to the Skilljam partnership and a promise to return the site to its roots. The relaunch of the site included new premium games from WorldWinner and new download games provided by Oberon Media. A Tripod.com blog was also integrated into the site under the title 'The Gamesville Blog'. This blog is now powered by WordPress.

After the relaunch of Gamesville, traffic to the site steadily increased, although not to its former heights.[11]

Notable products[edit]

In March 2007, Gamesville launched Magic 21, a variant of blackjack, where multiple players compete to win a cash jackpot worth up to $4,999.[11] The game is notable because it is the first proprietary jackpot game developed by Lycos/Gamesville since 2002's 'The Price Is Right'.

In July 2007, Gamesville launched a new avatar system enabling users to create 2D representations of themselves for use in Gamesville games.[12] Gamesville currently holds 'best avatar' contests in the Gamesville Blog.[13]

On May 28, 2008, Gamesville relaunched Bingo Zone with a new design, a chat game called Dickie's Bonus Balls, and progressive cash prizes.[14]

Notable intellectual property[edit]

Gamesville has several trademarks and patents in its portfolio, most notably US Patent 6,012,984, “Systems for providing large arena games over computer networks”.[15]

Playing Frantic Fish at Gamesville.com is the quickest way to earn Gamesville Coins (GV Coins). Gamesville recently modified the Frantic Fish game so that players can earn more sweepstake entries along with the Gamesville Coins. They also added catchy music and beach sound effects to make you want to slather on the sunscreen and sniff the salty air.

Is Gamesville.com for Real?

In one word: Yes. I’ve won at Gamesville playing Bingo Zone. I’ve won three times for a grand total of $19. It’s not a lot of money but I got all three checks in the mail within a couple of weeks of each win.

You can join Gamesville for free but you can also buy a Gold Membership for $2.99 per month. You can find all the benefits of a Gold Membership here. I do not have membership and I still won so I know winning is not dependent on whether or not you pay to play.

How to Play Frantic Fish

Frantic Fish is set up on a BINGO grid. There are five shells across the top that give you your numbers for that column and one extra bonus shell at the end. Match the numbers and create lines to score points.

Hint: You need to click “Auto Daub On”. It makes your life so much easier and gives you time to play the Tiki Tickets. Auto daub is on the right of your screen above the fish bowl. Auto Daub only works for the five numbers across the top of the columns, it does not work for the bonus shell.

Frantic Fish Scoring

Each matched number is worth 200 points. Each complete line and gold coin is worth 1,000 points.

The top 5 scores for each game earn extra Gamesville Coins and additional sweepstakes entries. It has always been difficult to place in the top 5 but it can be done with a good combination of numbers and coins.

Bonus Shell

The Bonus Shell will give you a bonus number, wild card fish, or a gold coin. If the bonus number is on your grid then you can use that fish. A wild card fish can be placed anywhere. A gold coin is worth 1,000 points and goes directly towards your score.

Gamesville

Fish Bowl

You can drag and drop non-matched fish from the bonus shell into the fish bowl in the bottom, right-hand corner of your screen. Each ‘˜Loser Fish’ is worth 25 Gamesville Coins at the end of the game.

Tiki Tickets

This is where you can earn some serious Gamesville Coins. Each Tiki Ticket costs 50 GV Coins to scratch but you can win 100, 250, 500, 1,000, or 5,000 coins per ticket. I have never lost coins playing this game. I normally receive between 3,500-5,000 Gamesville Coins at the end of each game. My highest score has been 9,125 GV Coins and my lowest was 1,900. These tickets are really worth it if you want to earn coins.

Sweepstakes Entries

Lycos Gamesville Free Games

As you play Frantic Fish you earn sweepstake entries into their daily $25 drawing. Each gold coin you reveal during the game earns 10 entries. Each line you form on the grid earns 15 entries. If you score in the top 5 you can earn 25 entries and if you take 1st place you earn 50 sweepstake entries.

Hint: The drawing is at midnight GMT. If you don’t know what time that is then look in the upper, right-hand corner of the screen and it will be counting down the time until the next drawing.
